What Are the Different Types of Epoxy Resin?

Epoxy resin is a mixture of Epoxy and resin, made in ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 4: 1. It is tough, highly chemical resistant, and has strong adhesion. It can last for a very long time with no or minimum repairs in high and heavy traffic areas.

Epoxy should be handled with care because it produces high heat as it dries. It should not be mixed in large volumes and applied in portions.


Epoxy Resins fall under two categories:

Glycidyl Resins: These Resins are designed for manufacturing high performance. They are high in resistance, have high thermal resistance, and have high reactivity. They have three subcategories: glycidyl-ether, glycidyl amine, and glycidyl-ester. These are the most commonly used Resins.

Non-Glycidyl Resins are formed by the peroxidation of an olefinic double bond. They are either aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic.

The Most used Epoxy Resins are:

Bisphenol Epoxy Resins:

They are used in broad applications, including civil engineering works, as coatings in commercial and residential settings, electrical insulating materials, and reactive intermediates.  Another key use is in composite materials, e.g., for windmills generating natural power.

It has the lowest molecular weight of all the epoxy resins.

Novalac Epoxy Resins:

These Resins are free of VOCs, which makes them extremely safe to use. They are produced as a result of a reaction between phenol and methanol.

They have a high level of adhesive strength, High-temperature Stability up to 300-350 degrees Celsius, and high water and Chemical Stability.

Aliphatic Epoxy Resins:

Aliphatic Epoxy Resins are of low molar mass and are formed by the reaction of epichlorohydrin with aliphatic alcohols. They polymerize very slowly at room temperature, so higher temperatures and suitable accelerators are usually required.

Halogenated Epoxy Resins:

They are prepared without halogen acids by combining at least one silicon intermediate with an optional silane, a halogen-containing ingredient with functional groups selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, amine, and carboxyl groups, and a resin selected from the group consisting of hydroxy and epoxy functional resins.

They are admixed for special properties. The commercial production and use of such resins are limited due to their high cost and low Tg.
